Serving Her Community Through Leadership in Dialysis Care

RHA Member Spotlight on Nikki Villagomez
Director, Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation | Saipan, Northern Marina Islands

For Nikki Villagomez, leadership in dialysis is deeply personal. Since 2018, she has managed Saipan’s only hospital-based dialysis facility, serving nearly 200 patients across the Northern Mariana Islands. In a community where access to care is essential, and resources can be limited, Nikki’s work is not just a profession; it is a commitment to ensuring lifesaving dialysis services remain available to those who need them most.

.

Nikki’s healthcare journey began in 2011 at HCA Healthcare hospitals in Las Vegas, Nevada. After returning home to Saipan, she stepped into the renal space and quickly embraced the complexity and responsibility that comes with leading a dialysis program. “Our clinic serves most of the community’s need for dialysis,” she shares. “I am grateful to be part of making these services available, because the need is always there.”

.

As a member of the Renal Healthcare Association for the past five years, Nikki has found RHA to be an essential resource in navigating the challenges of dialysis leadership, especially in a geographically unique setting. “Being a member with RHA has been extremely valuable as it provides education, community, networking, and problem-solving,” she says.

.

Nikki first discovered RHA, then known as NRAA, while searching for resources when she began her work in renal care. That search quickly turned into an ongoing connection that continues to shape her leadership today.

.

Through her engagement with RHA, Nikki has implemented meaningful improvements across her facility, from navigating staffing shortages and adapting to new regulatory requirements to strengthening QAPI processes, billing practices, emergency preparedness, and CMS survey readiness. Access to practical tools and peer insight has helped her lead with confidence while maintaining high standards of quality and safety for patients.

.

Her advice to new leaders in dialysis reflects both humility and experience: “Feel free to reach out for help. The renal space is complex, and there is always something new to learn as things change over time.” She emphasizes that having a supportive professional community, such as RHA, is key to working effectively and ensuring safe, high-quality patient care.

.

Outside of her professional role, Nikki brings the same sense of curiosity and adventure to her personal life. A certified Advanced Open Water diver, she has swum alongside sharks, manta rays, turtles, and other sea creatures. An adventurous spirit that mirrors her willingness to take on challenges and navigate the ever-evolving landscape of renal healthcare.

.

Through her leadership, dedication, and commitment to her community, Nikki continues to make a meaningful impact in dialysis care, ensuring that patients in Saipan have access to the quality services they rely on every day.
