RHA Supports Congress Moving to Empower HRSA to Modernize the US Transplant Model

Earlier this year, RHA signed onto a community letter led by ASN to commend and support the H.R.2544, allowing Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to make changes that ensure that patients are optimally served, strengthening accountability, equity, and performance in the organ donation and transplantation system.
Transplantation is the optimal therapy for most people with kidney failure. This legislation will strengthen and support HRSA’s Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Modernization Initiative, ensuring all patients have access to kidney transplants.
Subsequently, the Senate introduced S.1668, a companion bill to H.R. 2544, and ASN, RHA, and community groups drafted a follow-up community letter - showing our support for the Senate version of the bill. The Senate announcement highlights the need to enhance competition in the Organ Donation Network, to avoid continued corruption and mismanagement.
RHA members support kidney transplants as an option that many view as the optimal choice for ESRD patients. Modernizing the system will likely bring improvements to the current system, remove barriers, and improve patient outcomes.
